I don't have a real firm schedule but I've got a general idea of what I'll be wearing on each day for New York Comic Con. You can check out my post at AmberUnmasked.com.

I also have new tutorials/notes about how I created the Amazonia and Ace costumes which I'll be debuting in NYCC.

Firestar Galleries Uploaded

Over 100 new images of my FIRESTAR cosplay have been uploaded to AmberUnmasked.com! There are 3 separate galleries so that viewers can choose of their own volition which gallery they want to see (I'm not the internet police so if you like to look at boobs, well, I think it's your responsibility to monitor your internet activity): a full costume "G" rated gallery, a "PG-13" striptease gallery, and an "R" nudes gallery which is in the members only area.

One of the questions I am asked most frequently is,  "Who is your favorite character?" It's not a simple answer. Overall, I always say Batman. But when it comes to who did I like to play as a kid, well it was half Wonder Woman and half Firestar. I watched a lot of Superfriends and Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends. I "flew" around my cousin's backyard and leapt from the top of his swing set. I can't recall ever being Hawkgirl or Supergirl. I think we did our share of Wonder Twins but it was the norm for me to be Wonder Woman or Firestar and I rarely strayed. I didn't like change in my playing pretend rules.

Marvel's Black Cat commission

These pictures are of a suit that I've made for someone else so it's a bit baggy on me because the customer is much taller than I am. I just had to try it on because I was so happy with how it came out and I think it makes for a better picture when you can see someone in an outfit even if it isn't perfect.

The customer commissioned just the black bodysuit in the style worn by Marvel's Black Cat, Felicia Hardy. I am not responsible for any of the accessories nor the fur trim which the customer will be adding later. So basically, I had it pretty easy but after having my confidence shaken a few times, I was nervous about delving back into taking commissions.

As usual, I used a Kwik Sew figure skating pattern as my base. I only had minor modifications for the leg length, neckline and front zipper. You can see me testing the neckline/cleavage in the picture to the right.

Here are my suggestions for the other elements of the suit if anyone else is looking to put one together (links naturally may break after original posting due other people's website dynamics):

Wig: I've switched from bestwigoutlet to cosworx.com because the prices are usually better; it's just harder to navigate around the site looking for color swatches but price usually wins. Plus cosworx is somehow related to cosplay.com which has a trading post/marketplace forum where you can find used and new wigs (and lots of other things).

Mask: I use Lance at XtremeDesignFx.com for that; he offers the perfect mask for Black Cat or Ms. Marvel among all of his other work. I do find that ordering takes a long time so keep that in mind.

Variations: Sometimes Black Cat has white boots and white gloves with the fur; other times black. You can avoid getting fur installed on the legs if you purchase boots with santa style fur trimming:

This leaves fur for the gloves/sleeves and the collar.

Marvel's Black Cat costume for sale

I have the item listed on etsy:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25940867

Does not include the wig!

This is loosely based on Mark Brooks' rendition of Black Cat. It was only the second suit I ever made and far from the best. I'm being honest. The $75 price is basically covering the Dragonskin mask which was made by a friend of mine.

Survived FCBD '09

COMIC FUSION

We had the best turnout to date for FCBD. We were so lucky that the rain stopped at 11am when we opened the store and the sun was out by noon!

Thank you to everyone who came in to explore our little world of comic books and collectibles. And special thanks to all our guests: Erica Hesse, Rob Kramer and Scott Barnett as well as Gary & Evan who added their costuming talents to join me as Marvel Superheroes.

If you missed it, you also missed The Great Lodge Cafe's Moose who joined us on the sidewalk to greet the good citizens of Flemington, New Jersey.

WWD covers Marvel - whodothunkit

When Women's Wear Daily starts covering Marvel comics in their articles, well, it really makes you take a step back and think. Ok, so they didn't review the Dark Reign saga or anything but they have featured Marvel's latest "female products" -- yes, that phrasing made all female fans cringe because it sounds like we'd be offered the latest Emma Frost tampon. Nonetheless, there really are new products being marketed towards girls of all ages by Marvel:

http://www.wwd.com/markets-news/marvel-debuts-female-apparel-and-cosmetics-2082130#/wwd

The article mentions that the shirts are licensed out to Mighty Fine which does create a lot of fun shirt but I personally find their quality low. They do get the cut correct for the female form but their cotton jersey material is thin and practically see-through and shrink terribly.

Dress up your kids' rooms at Walgreens?

I stumbled upon this while searching for something unrelated, of course, which is how my web surfing usually goes. Here are the first couple paragraphs of the article and the rest is at the source link provided.

X-Men's Rogue v. 2.0

My very first superhero costume was a Rogue suit which I had commissioned. It was okay but I had hoped for better. It wasn't exactly the right shades of green or yellow that I wanted and the color blocking was done in a way that looked like it been pieced together with scraps or at best, used as little yardage as possible. I use a lot of fabric for a suit my size because I would rather have larger pieces cut on the fold than a bunch of seams from small pieces stitched together; just my preference for the best looking suit possible.

The jacket - I spent the past couple of years slowly gathering the items to make the Rogue suit that I wanted. I got very lucky in finding what I feel is the perfect brown jacket at Burlington Coat Factory for only $17 and it's made from polyurethane not leather or cotton. I made my own X patches for the shoulders and attached them with a combination of gorilla glue and instant vinyl glue.

The wig came from one of my shopping binges online at Best Wig Outlet. It's by Sepia, called "Ebony."

The boots are faux leather and I picked them up a long time ago at Famous Footwear. I happen to prefer the more practical brown knee highs which I can wear in normal everyday life rather than the thigh-high plastic yellow boots with green strappy things.

The gloves were an amazing find at a thrift store in their vintage room! They were only $4 because they were considered "lightly soiled." I knew patience would pay off by shopping for pieces over time and waiting for just the right thing. I hate making gloves!

The belt is just something from my closet. This particular buckle design is just two layers of foamies; one in black, one in red - giving it the embossed "X" look. The backing is a strip of black spandex for the belt to weave through. I've just ordered a nice fancy X buckle from TheWrapofCons but I'll need to paint it.

When it came to making the bodysuit, I started with the Kwik Sew #3052 activewear pattern which has been the staple base for all my full length suits. I had transferred it to muslin for my size and marked up my color blocking. Then I transferred those pattern pieces to paper (because that's what I had and was out of muslin) in order to get all the pieces I needed for this design. Let me express how much I hate sewing on curves! I have a couple of spots that are little too pinched or gathered but it's actually pretty good overall.

Fabric - The spandex is Milliskin Shiny Tricot 4-way Stretch which I ordered through SpandexHouse.com and it arrived THE NEXT DAY. I think the color codes I ordered were #46 (green) and #11 (yellow).

The collar's stitching is actually a bit of a mess for getting that black bias tape in place. Luckily most of the problem stitching is on the inside. I also decided to put the zipper in the front which has two functions, one practical and one for kicks: the practical element is that a front zipper is easier to get out of; the other reason is because it can be unzipped enough for a sexier look.

I also ran into some problems that worked themselves out when I embroidered the chest logo directly onto the suit; the other option would be to make a patch and glue it on like I did for the jacket. By putting the spandex through the embroidery, it began to make folds as it progressed but it's not even noticeable in the final product. I also decided to make a full X logo using a black background and yellow "X" and circled edge; oftentimes Rogue's logo is really just the black spaces and no "X" at all. I went for something cleaner looking plus adding an original touch.

This suit will debut at Free Comic Book Day at Comic Fusion in Flemington, NJ (May 2nd)!

Another Marvel Entry

I couldn't resist trying to submit a second costume for the Marvel contest even though I don't stand a chance of winning against Allen as a Super Skrull or Troy's Green Goblin. Nonetheless, I had decided to dress up as Black Cat for work today so I had Ron take a few seconds of video in our driveway. I have some dorky photos too of me working the new espresso machine.
